The power of sophisticated analytics
By creating a two-way dialogue between energy service providers and their customers, the Tendril Connect™ platform empowers consumers to effectively understand and make informed choices about their energy usage, and can help energy service providers improve compliance with PUC mandates and take advantage of long-term operational and infrastructure cost savings.
For providers, measuring return on investment is key to reducing energy consumption at the residential level and to determining optimal programs to help consumers incorporate smart energy practices into their everyday lives. The Tendril Savings Impact Methodology is a flexible, valuable approach that helps energy service providers track progress to goal for each individual customer.

A unique, more detailed approach
Conventional modeling and measurement techniques tend to draw conclusions based on broad segmentations and assumptions about home characteristics, and only evaluate savings overall, across all participants. While the Tendril Savings Impact Methodology incorporates these traditional approaches, it also provides more advanced capabilities to deliver accurate results at the individual level. By using the methodology on a weekly or monthly basis during program execution, energy service providers can take advantage of important metrics with which to troubleshoot and customize their energy efficiency solutions for each individual home.
Built on the methods prescribed by ASHRAE, the Tendril Savings Impact Methodology leverages an automated industry-standard modeling engine that produces results based on individual savings values for every program participant. What’s more, the methodology allows for more refined analysis that is extremely beneficial when applied to future programs. For example, energy service providers can account for the weather’s effects on each home and apply unique weather adjustments, expose dependencies within the home that affect consumers’ energy use choices, and bundle home characteristics and demographics into the model, while incorporating homeowners’ attitudes and involvement toward energy use.
How it works
To determine the number of parameters to include in the model and handle difficult cases in the modeling process on the fly, Tendril uses a unique iteration and optimization process that analyzes the data for each unique household. Tendril applies statistics during and after the modeling process to maintain standard error in the population savings. We can then generate savings for each individual and for any population segment.
The Tendril Savings Impact Methodology provides important capabilities that allow energy service providers to show each homeowner if they are on track to meet their established energy saving goal. In addition to leveraging traditional methodologies that allow for neighborhood and specific home comparisons and overall population savings, the methodology can:
- Segment homes with different types of efficiency measures (based on the parameters of the model) before a program even starts
- Present how each home is improving and incorporate very accurate weather adjustments based on existing data about how each unique home responds to weather
- Calculate a home’s fitness by providing a deep filtering criterion to identify homes with anomalies that can adversely affect the savings results for entire populations
The Tendril Savings Impact Methodology takes progress-to-goal determination approaches to a whole new level. Capitalizing on deeper, more relevant insight, utilities can design more effective Energy Efficiency programs and consumers can make more informed decisions about their energy use.
