Manage and control the energy demands of electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles (EVs) hold the promise of reducing the world’s dependence on fossils fuels. However, the coming flood of EVs will also introduce staggering new management and demand response challenges for utilities.
With up to 1,000,000 electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles coming onto the market in the next five years, utilities need to consider their distribution system, capacity management and scenario planning. Innovative new sub-metering capabilities and consumer engagement programs will be needed to help customers get the energy they need without overtaxing the grid.
Without visibility into, and coordination across EV charging, localized demand will overtax distribution assets. To overcome these challenges, utilities need an intelligent EV management solution that delivers insight, control and flexibility, while meeting the growing needs of EV customers.
Tendril’s Electric Vehicle application will deliver utility benefits including:
- Decreased cost by managing transformer loading
- Communicating and managing electric vehicle pricing and charging programs
- Participation of electric vehicles as part of an integrated Demand Response plan
Tendril’s Electric Vehicle application will deliver consumer benefits including:
- Providing more consumer control of charge time to help manage costs and load control
- Consumer prioritization and access to energy efficiency incentives
- Deeper understanding and management of electric vehicle charging costs
The Tendril Electric Vehicle application will provide an integrated utility/consumer solution that reduces the need for costly upgrades to existing utility infrastructure. The Tendril Electric Vehicle Application will connect EVs and/or EV charging stations to utility and in-home portals so that demand requirements are known and decisions can be made or automated to best manage this load.
Through the Tendril Energize web portal, consumers can view the percentage of battery charge and equivalent miles, as well as the cost to charge the vehicle. The consumer can also set rules so that the electric vehicle only charges during less expensive off-peak times. Integrated with whole-house consumption data, EV sub-metered consumption can provide the consumer with disaggregated views of their overall consumption versus other appliance and major loads in the home.
Utilities will be able to communicate or locally automate price and control signals to implement future reliability or regulatory guidelines. Utilities can assist homeowners minimize costs and reliability issues with Tendril applications to prioritize appliance/device operation or to manage electric vehicle charging.
