Smart Grid Products and Appliances

Imagine a dishwasher that automatically delays its run cycle until utility rates drop. Envision a water heater that operates only at highest efficiency during peak demand. How about a thermostat that warns you when energy rates are peaking? As utility companies prepare to transition over the next few years to a smarter power grid (and possibly variable rates) to better manage supply, the stage is set for a new generation of home products that will help us consumers manage our usage and save money. To give you a feel for what will be offered and how it will work, here is a look at Smart Grid compatible thermostats, water heaters, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, home energy managers and more. Most of these products are still in development or running as part of pilot programs. More will be available through your utility company and on store shelves in 2011, 2012 and after.
