Tendril Thermostat
Tendril Thermostat
Tendril Thermostat is a ZigBee Smart Energy compliant thermostat that communicates with a variety of in-home devices such as outlets and electricity meters.

The Tendril Thermostat is a ZigBee-enabled thermostat that is sourced from a major multi-national ODM distributor and manufacturer of electronic devices serving customers including Wal-Mart, Siemens, Johnson&Johnson and GE. Tendril Thermostat communicates with any of three (or more) devices, outlets, Tendril Consumer Portals or electricity meters - to respond to fluctuations in electricity price and/or specific direct load control commands. The thermostat is wired to traditional HVAC units in a similar fashion to current thermostats in order to control the HVAC units via user-controlled (or Tendril Consumer Portal controlled) set points. The thermostat provides an indicator of whether or not a load is being controlled (e.g. whether the heating or cooling is currently “on” or “off) allowing for effective monitoring of electricity consumption, managing to reduce electricity load and controlling to reduce load in specific instances.

Key Highlights of the Tendril Thermostat:
  • Network commissioning through user-accessible menu
  • On-screen indication of successful network commissioning
  • External button to allow user override
  • Text message area of 20 or more characters to allow for any utility-generated customer message
  • Current price indicator
  • Indicator(s) for pending Demand Response or Direct Load Control events and their timing
  • Ability to join to/with smart outlets to control them as a proxy.
  • Necessary security in place to be directly registered with the utility for demand load control commands or to be registered locally (and less securely) to a Tendril Consumer Portal acting as a proxy for demand load control commands.
  • Pre-programmed/factory-programmed “price rules” that indicate how the t-stat should behave in the presence of various price tiers (as available from the electricity meter or from the broadband gateway price messages)
  • Dynamically re-programmable, from a Tendril Consumer Portal to create different behavioral response(s) to price information and/or change the prices associated with pre-programmed price rules.
  • Remote set point capability (as directed by rules set in Tendril Consumer Portals)
  • Remote temperature sensing to allow the Tendril Consumer Portal to indicate current temperature and to store/log historical temperature patterns.
  • Embedded Tendril Agent for local/remote customer service rep or installer-led network commissioning and diagnostics (as necessary/appropriate)
  • Embedded ZigBee radio
  • UL, FCC Certification pending
