PLMA Recognizes Indiana Michigan Power and Tendril With Program Pacesetter Award

Award recognizes outstanding demand management solutions with excellent program design and delivery

April 17, 2019 -- PLMA honored Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and Tendril with a Program Pacesetter award for IM Home, recognizing their innovative approach to residential integrated demand side management. The program, using Tendril Orchestrated Energy, was awarded for dramatically shifting peak load and improving the energy efficiency of smart thermostats, all without sacrificing customer comfort.

IM Home shifted load by up to 85% during demand response events while maintaining customer comfort by staying within 2 degrees of set point temperature. Beyond ensuring customer comfort, I&M achieved these outstanding results with virtually no snap-back effect that is common with most direct load control (DLC) programs. On days when load shifting was not required, the program saved nearly 90,000 hours of cooling runtime, ultimately saving more than 263 MWh in a little more than four months of operation. I&M has been deploying Tendril Orchestrated Energy since 2016, and is on track to expand the program in 2019.

“Building on our collaborative relationship with I&M and strong 2017 results, we flawlessly executed demand management events with even better load shift and customer participation,” said Emilie Stone, Head of Demand Management Solutions at Tendril. “We’re excited to build upon the foundation we’ve created with I&M to add more thermostat providers, greatly expand the number of enrollees and deliver more savings.”

Orchestrated Energy is a device-agnostic demand response program dramatically curtailing peak load and doubling the energy efficiency (EE) of smart thermostats without sacrificing customer comfort. The program runs patented algorithms to optimize the timing of cooling load, mimicking the logic that system operators use to dispatch power plants. The software creates a thermal model for each home, then sets a day-ahead optimization schedule for smart thermostats.

Previously, Tendril Orchestrated Energy received a Gold Edison Award, a Grid Edge Award from Greentech Media and was named a finalist by Platts Global Energy Awards.
